Stump Grinding | Whit’s-Turn Tree Care

Once the tree is gone the stump doesn’t have to stay. Professional stump grinding and removal throughout the Central Coast.

Stump Grinding on the Central Coast

After a tree is removed the stump left behind can be an eyesore, a tripping hazard, and an obstacle for mowing, landscaping, and future use of your yard. At Whit’s-Turn Tree Care we provide professional stump grinding and removal services throughout San Luis Obispo County — leaving your property clean, level, and ready for whatever comes next.

We handle stumps of all sizes — from small ornamental trees to large mature Oaks and Eucalyptus — with the right equipment for every job.

Stump Grinding vs. Full Root Removal

Not every stump situation is the same. We offer two levels of service depending on your needs and plans for the area:

Stump Grinding

We grind the stump down below ground level — leaving the root system in place to decompose naturally over time. This is the most common approach and works well for most situations where you plan to replant grass, add landscaping, or simply want the stump gone.

Full Root System Removal

For situations where the root system itself needs to be removed — foundation work, hardscaping, or areas where roots could cause ongoing issues — we can sometimes remove the stump and root system entirely. This is a more involved process but leaves the area completely clear for construction or major landscaping projects.

We’ll assess your situation and recommend the right approach for your specific needs and plans for the area.

Safety First — We Call in the Underground Ticket

This is something not every tree company does — and it matters.

Before we grind any stump we call in an underground utility locate ticket on your behalf. This triggers utility companies to respond to your property and mark the location of any underground utilities in the area of the stump — gas lines, water lines, electrical, and more.

Grinding into an underground utility line is dangerous and expensive. We won’t put your property or our crew at risk by skipping this step. It takes a little extra time but it’s the right way to do the job — every time.

Two Types of Grinders for Every Situation

Not every stump is in an easy to reach location. We have two different stump grinders to handle any situation:

Track Mounted Grinder

Our track mounted grinder is designed for larger stumps and more demanding jobs. The tracked base allows it to navigate uneven terrain and get into areas where wheeled equipment struggles.

Wheel Mounted Grinder

Our wheel mounted grinder is more compact and maneuverable — ideal for residential properties, tighter spaces, and smaller stumps where a larger machine isn’t necessary.

Having both means we can handle any stump on any property without turning your yard into a construction zone.

What Happens to the Stump Grindings?

After grinding the stump grindings — wood chips and sawdust — are typically left on site and piled back into the hole left by the stump. This creates a mound of natural material that will settle and decompose over time. Many homeowners use this as a base for new plantings or simply let it break down naturally.

If you’d prefer the grindings removed entirely we can haul them away for an additional charge — leaving the area completely clear and ready for immediate use.

What Size Stumps Do We Handle?

All of them. From small ornamental tree stumps to large mature Oaks, Eucalyptus, and other species common to the Central Coast — our equipment handles stumps of any size. The right grinder for your job will be determined during your free estimate.

Is Stump Grinding Included With Tree Removal?

Stump grinding is always a separate service from tree removal. When we remove a tree the stump remains — grinding is quoted and scheduled separately. If you’d like both done at the same time we’re happy to coordinate and provide a combined estimate for the full scope of work.
